Rally to hit the city roads on weekend SH Daily2008-5-27
THE 2008 National Rally Championship will roar through the streets of the city when the event is flagged off at Wujiaochang in Shanghai's Yangpu District this weekend.
It is the first time that the rally is being held on the city's roads, organizers of the rally said.
About 70 cars from at least 20 teams are expected to participate in the 190-kilometer rally that will be flagged off on Saturday morning and finish the next day.
About 140 drivers, including those from UK, Australia, Germany and New Zealand, will compete in the two-day rally.
The opening ceremony will be held at Wanda Square in Wujiaochang on Friday evening with the ignition roar of the 70 car engines in full blast, Qiu Weichang, deputy head of the Shanghai Sports Administration, said yesterday.
The rally will start the next day at the New Jiangwan City, a new modern residential area. It has two routes - 5.3 kilometers and 6.57 kilometers - and involves 20 stages.
The annual championship began in 1985 and Shanghai is staging it for the eighth time, but the first on the city roads. Understandably, the traffic in Yangpu District will be curtailed over the weekend.
Previously, it was staged in the suburban Songjiang District
